21st Century
Honored fourth grade students for essays on “The Woman I Most Admire.” Continued annual dinner theater and sponsorship of math and science awards. Guest speakers at each of the five meetings held each year discuss critical issues affecting the status of women and girls in our society today.
1990’s
Initiated annual recognition of graduating high school seniors from seven area schools for their proficiency in math and science. Celebrated 60 th anniversary, with recognition from many area dignitaries.
1980’s
Continued study of current issues. Sponsored several candidate debates. Sponsored the dinner theater to benefit the Educational Foundation fund. Branch performed “Portrait of Susan” for local and district audiences.
1970’s
Branch studied drug abuse, environmental issues, and women’s liberation. Sponsored “Meet the Candidates” events and publicized the need to vote.
1960’s
Furnished supplies for area migrant camps. Presented dictionaries to outstanding seniors. Members were trained to teach in literacy programs.
1950’s
Sponsored annual International Dinner at Alfred University . Established a nursery school for four-year-olds which lasted for ten years. Tuition was $15.00 per month. Sponsored a Hornell Civic Theater production of “Pygmalion” to a sold-out event! Study groups met monthly at members’ homes.
1940’s
The Trapp Family performed for an AAUW benefit. Tickets were $1.10 each. Funds were raised to support Bundles for Britain . The Wellsville members decided to form their own chapter. The rest of the membership became known as the Alfred-Hornell Branch.
1930’s
On May 14, 1938 eighty area women met in Alfred to form an Alfred AAUW branch under the leadership of Marie Drake. Annual dues were set at $3.00. The Branch included members from Alfred, Canisteo, Hornell and Wellsville.
